Agglomeration and networks in spatial economies
We consider the parallel developments in the economics of agglomeration and the economics of networks. We explore the complementarities between the productivity benefits of agglomeration and those of network linkages, arguing that networks of actors dispersed over space may substitute for agglomerations of actors at a single point. متن کاملLocation Strategies for Agglomeration Economies
Geographically concentrated industry activity creates pools of skilled labor and specialized suppliers, and increases opportunities for knowledge spillovers. The strategic value of these agglomeration economies may vary by firm, depending upon the relative value of each economy, and upon firm and agglomeration economy traits. To better determine when a firm will be attracted to agglomeration ec...
متن کاملThe magnitude and causes of agglomeration economies
Firms and workers are much more productive in large and dense urban environments. There is substantial evidence of such agglomeration economies based on three aproaches. First, on a clustering of production beyond what can be explained by chance or comparative advantage. Second, on spatial patterns in wages and rents. Third, on systematic variations in productivity with the urban environment. H...
متن کاملSpatial Concentration in The Irish Pharmaceutical Industry: The Role of Government Intervention and Agglomeration Economies
This paper examines the spatial pattern of the pharmaceutical industry in Ireland and in particular the drivers accounting for spatial concentration in the industry. 1 Spatial concentration indexes indicate a particularly high level of spatial concentration in one of the industry's sub-sectors, namely, drug substance production. This high level of concentration has been attributed to the operat...
متن کاملSpatial organization of firms: internal and external agglomeration economies and location choices through the value chain
We explore the impact of geographically bounded intra-firm spillovers (internal agglomeration economies) and geographically bounded inter-firm spillovers (external agglomeration economies) on firms’ location strategies. Using data from the Census Bureau’s Longitudinal Business Database and the U.S. Cluster Mapping Project, we analyze organic expansions of biopharmaceutical firms (by both new es...
